Design Deep-Dive #8: Lands Week Finale – Back to Basics!

Since I first began playing Magic the Gathering, I knew I wanted to draw a set of my own basic lands. This project became my excuse to finally do it! A fully playable set of custom cards just wouldn’t feel complete without some good old basics to match.

I tried to capture that core “feel” of each color without worrying too much about creating clearly identifiable locations from our campaign. Players should be able to glance at any of these from across the table and know IMMEDIATELY what they are.

It’s hard to call this a “Design Deep-Dive” when there’s not much to say about the most fundamental pieces in the game of Magic. In fact, these are the only cards I’ve already gotten physically printed at full quality – after all, they’re the only cards in the entire set that I KNOW won’t need balance tweaks!

It’s exciting to have even just this much in final-quality, physical form! For now, these lands are keeping me motivated to bring the other 270 cards up to that same level.

And that’s a wrap on Lands Week! Next time, we’ll start digging into the physical process of designing cards: Packs, Proxies, and Playtesting
