About
Adventure Awaits in the Kingdom of Crestfall!
Now, this fully playable, completely custom Magic set celebrates their legend with unique mechanics and all original art from the players themselves!
About This Project
275 cards.
3 brand new mechanics.
All original art.
The Unwell Kingdom is a fully playable set of fake Magic: the Gathering cards, designed from the ground up to celebrate a 6-year D&D campaign of the same name. Each card is mechanically unique (except for the 5 basic lands and a few familiar tokens), geared for limited play, and features hand-drawn art.
This website was created to chronicle the development of the set and showcase its cards and artists. This is a fan-made project, and is not for sale or profit.
No AI art was used in its creation.
New Mechanics
The Unwell Kingdom features three new keywords on several of its cards.
Inspire X
Create X Inspiration tokens. They’re colorless enchantments with “Sacrifice this enchantment: Target creature you control gains +1/+1 until end of turn.”
Inspiration tokens are like single-use +1/+1 counters that can be banked up and used at instant speed! They’re meant to reflect D&D’s Inspiration mechanic, which gives players re-rolls to cash out at strategic moments. Inspire effects are mostly found in red, and especially among Bards.
Concentration
If enchanted creature is dealt damage or targeted by a spell or ability, sacrifice this enchantment.
Concentration is a keyword on many of the Aura Enchantments in the set. Because they’re easier to remove than ordinary Auras, cards with Concentration tend to offer some immediate payoff, or snowballing value to reward maintaining them for several turns. Much like Concentration spells in D&D, these work well with Wizards and other spellcasters who try to avoid direct combat.
Hoard
The hoard is a shared pool of cards in exile. To hoard a card, exile that card and put a hoard counter on it.
Hoard is a mechanic closely tied to this set’s Dragon cards in black. Dragons in the Unwell Kingdom are insatiable hoarders of anything from knowledge, to places, to the souls of the dead. Hoarded cards can be thought of as a second exile zone, with various ways to steal and play opponents’ cards!
A Standalone Set Cube
This set is designed to function best as a set cube, perfect for draft or sealed games. These cards weren’t intended to play alongside real Magic cards.
An Unwell Kingdom pack contains 16 cards:
- 1x Illusory Palace
- 9x Commons
- 4x Uncommons
- 2x Rares and/or Mythics
Illusory Palace
Player Characters
The World of Lyrea
Lyrea was a land defined by its leaders. For generations, the dreaded Fell King ruled from his castle atop the looming, sea-beaten cliffs of Crestfall. His was a reign of fearful isolation – Crestfall’s gates remained shut, trade routes were stifled, and remote villages and lordships were left to fend for themselves. Citizens feared the Fell King, but he in turn feared something much greater… an unspeakable darkness gnawed from within the heart of the kingdom.
However, 70 years ago, the people of Crestfall rose up against the Fell King! Their leader, a young girl who had grown up within the castle walls, delivered vengeance upon him with blazing speeches and the cold steel of her sword. The Fell King was executed, and she claimed the throne to the joy of her compatriots. So began a new era, the rule of Queen Lyndette.
For a time, Lyrea flourished as never before! The Queen reestablished commerce and offered the support of her Royal Guard to maintain order throughout the land. Ships even began to sail to distant lands, like the shining kingdom of Eldoris. Crestfall prospered at long last.
But not all were happy with the new regime. Wilhelm, son of the Fell King, schemed in exile to mount a Resistance army, so that he may reclaim the kingdom in his father’s name! Criminals and mercenaries continued to deal across an extensive black market! Cultists gathered in the shadowy catacombs of Crestfall, eager to revive the Fell King… And still, even deeper, beyond the indigo veil of death itself, a great evil continued to grow!
And so, the stage was set for the heroes of our tale, a motley band of strangers thrust together by fate, to begin their epic journey in the Unwell Kingdom!

Lumi
Lumi had one condition when designing her tiefling fighter, Mishka: at some point in the story, Mishka needed to lose an arm. She was devastated to see it unceremoniously lopped off after a bad roll rushing into a trap, but that didn’t stop her from crafting the limb into an unforgettable magical weapon!
Aaron Silva
While Aaron didn’t play in the original D&D campaign, he instead made his mark on this project through playtesting the cards. He jumped at the chance to contribute art to cardboard!
Every time a gruul card gets nerfed, Aaron experiences a sharp pain in back of his head.

Cole Maier
Cole guest-starred as Wap, a tropical kenku reanimated through Garp Garp’s necromancy! Sass levels in that one session rivaled the rest of the campaign combined.
