Lore Spotlight #4: Memnos & Lyros

(orig. published Feb. 22, 2024)

Last of the four “God Sorceries” in the set, Memnos and Lyros represent the very creation myth in the world of the Unwell Kingdom.

In the time before time, there were only the primordial giants. Memnos and Lyros found each other in the vast nothing and fell in love. They marveled at the unlimited potential of their world, a blank canvas with endless possibilities, and Memnos especially grew giddy with anticipation. They were eager to see life burst forth into the void. Lyros was less concerned with that, and cared more about staying by their beloved’s side forever more.

However, this was not to be. Memnos fell ill, and soon died – the first death. It is said their giant body fell to rest, curling down into pointed mountain ranges and vast plains. Thus came land. From their heart grew a great tree which towered above all, carrying with it all that hope and curiosity to grow. From this came the Whittler, the first elf, whose duty is to carve the wood from that great tree into all manner of plants and creatures. Thus came life.

Lyros was heartbroken. For who could conceive of death when before there had been none? They fell to their knees and wept. Thus came the sea. It is said the peculiar shape of Crestfall’s cliffs, the very capital of its great kingdom, is Lyros kneeling and grieving, ever still.

This is the story passed down by the people of Lyrea to this day, and even the name of the entire continent is a sign of their reverence. The giants are celebrated for land and sea and life through songs and festivals. All is owed to the giants.
