Tourmaline stands out as the lone Planeswalker in the entire set. She was one of the player characters at the start of our campaign, a naive young genasi who becomes a Blood Hunter and very quickly finds the weight of the world on her shoulders. While her player had to step away after the first few arcs, Tourmaline’s impact on the story carried through to the finale!
Just as Tourmaline found herself traveling back and forth between The Indigo, a liminal realm of souls, her card cares a lot about graveyards. Her plus ability mills cards based on her loyalty, which any dedicated mill deck would eagerly use to snowball towards victory, especially in limited formats with 40-card decks. Her minus ability is mostly defensive, allowing her to phase out until your next turn while Surveil 2 can help continue to put key cards into the grave. Lastly, her ultimate cashes in loyalty counters for graveyard recursion—if any player’s deck has been sufficiently milled by then, this ability can cheat any permanent directly onto the battlefield for a sudden tempo swing!
Most player characters in this set are represented in two creatures each, a “low level” 2-drop and a “high-level” 5-drop! Since Tourmaline literally vanished into the Indigo, it felt right to pay homage with a single Planeswalker card instead, setting her apart from the rest while still offering some powerful synergies!
