If you control no enchanted creatures, Study Buddy can attack as though it didn’t have defender.

Study Buddy is designed to be the perfect support for a deck built around Concentration Auras. By making your own creatures untargetable by opponents, Study Buddy removes the risk of your enchantments getting knocked off unexpectedly, letting you maximize their long-term value.

Originally, it always had defender, but it felt bad in playtests when the protection angle wasn’t relevant. Because of this, I added the card’s final ability, letting it swing if there are no allies it needs to guard!
